[Grammar] ~는/은/ㄴ 편이다

~는/은/ㄴ 편이다 (~pyeo-ni-da) – tends to/type

~는/은/ㄴ 편이다 can be quite tricky because there is no set definition to its meaning.

However, you would use ~는/은/ㄴ 편이다 when you are trying to describe something that is very subjective.

You can say that ~는/은/ㄴ 편이다 is a stronger kind of guess than ~(은/ㄴ & 을/ㄹ)것 같다 but you’re not sure if the person/people you’re talking to would agree with you because it’s subjective.

Example: 나 밤마다 10~11시에 자니까 일찍 자는 편이야.
I sleep at around 10~11pm every night so I’m the type that sleeps early.
I sleep at around 10~11pm every night so I tend to sleep early.

As you can see from the above example, you are not sure if the person/people you’re talking to would think that 10~11pm is an early time to sleep. So you would use ~는/은/ㄴ 편이다.

Also, there is a very slight difference. You can translate it or understand it depending on the context of the situation.

In the case where you are sure that you sleep early, you would say instead:

나 밤마다 7시에 자니까 일찍 자는 사람이야.
I sleep at 7pm every night so I’m a person that sleeps early.
